Forecasting extreme hydrometeorological events: Training Workshop

Eumetcal with EUMeTrain and EMS is organising a course with the title “Forecasting extreme hydrometeorological events” This course is primarily intended for forecasters, but other participants interested in the subject are also welcome. The primary aim of the workshop is to expose operational forecasters to the different components of the weather warning process through the simulation and analysis of some extreme hydrometeorological case studies. In addition, the participants will have the possibility to discuss the weaknesses and strengths of the weather warning process carried out in their home environment and the impact of the warnings, including communication with stakeholders.
The workshop consists of presentations, a demonstration and lab sessions. If you have a laptop, please bring it for the lab session. We hope it will be an interactive and interesting day.

Content and programme

The simulation of an operational environment is achieved through a case study implemented with the meteorological simulator developed by EUMETSAT and KNMI training staff. The case study consists of an extreme weather event that occurred in Europe and included severe hydrological impacts. During the simulation of the case the participants will:

  • formulate the forecast for the extreme hydrometeorological event
  • support the decision making process for issuing hydrometeorological warnings in relation to defined warning criteria and frameworks

Following the simulation, the participants will be exposed to assess the impacts to safety and the national economy produced by the extreme hydrometeorological events, and be engaged in discussions regarding the communication of weather warnings to stakeholders.

Target audience

This workshop is primarily aimed at the community of operational weather forecasters and hydrologists across Europe whose main duty is forecasting and issuing weather warnings. Forecasters from other branches are also welcome to attend, as well as people involved in using warning or in relevant management position. Thus the applicants for the workshop should have:

  • general experience with weather forecasting and the warning process, and
  • experience with the interpretation of basic hydrometeorological data and products, e.g. ground observations, satellite, radar, NWP, etc.

In order to optimally benefit from the workshop, it would be desirable that participants get more closely acquainted with the weather warning system in their organisation beforehand.
